The history of Valentine's Day
What is Valentine's Day and where does it come from?
Every year on February 14th, everyone celebrates this day by sending messages of love. Couples send personalized cards or flowers beforehand.
Valentine's Day as we know it seems to have originated from the Lupercalia. This was a festival celebrated every year in Rome between February 13th and 15th. For them, it was an occasion for rituals of expiation for sins committed against the gods. Houses were thoroughly cleaned, and salt and wheat were placed on the floors throughout the entire house.
How Valentine's Day developed.
This celebration did not begin following the execution of Father Valentine. It was only 200 years later that February 14th was proclaimed Valentine's Day.
The medieval poet Chaucer was the first to associate Valentine's Day with true love. This marked the beginning of the tradition of love, a ritual expressing affection and admiration, most often in secret.
This custom has taken root in Europe and stories have emerged about a high court or female judges asking each other questions related to love on February 14th each year.
A symbol of Valentine's Day?
This custom of sending personalized messages or cards arose so that people could express their affections.
These cards were magnificent; they were handmade and contained Cupid, hearts, flowers, and were filled with lace and ribbon. They were individually designed to express their love.
These cards allow us to gradually make room for the gifts we know today, such as jewelry or preserved roses.
But the young girls and boys remain very attached to this tradition.

Valentine's Day in our time?
Valentine's Day is most often associated with love.
Valentine's Day is celebrated in virtually every country, with different cultures adopting their own traditions for this holiday.
In some countries, Valentine's Day is a tradition intended to demonstrate the love and affection one has for one's family, whereas in the West this tradition is more for couples in love.
However, there are also countries where this day consists of dropping off lollipops and gifts for children and helping close friends.
Every year millions of romantic cards are distributed; Valentine's Day is most often associated with the red rose accompanied by a small card expressing the person's feelings.
February 14th is usually spent with a loved one, enjoying a nice dinner at a restaurant, a picnic, or simply a meal at home.
Some couples treat themselves to a stay in another country, in a hotel to spend an unforgettable time.
Marriage proposals are often made on this day, as it's the perfect day to express love and commitment. Regardless of the method you choose, proposals made on Valentine's Day are memorable and filled with love.
These days this holiday is a hot topic; some see this tradition more as a commercial holiday than a special day for lovers.
